Why Is Gum Health Important to Maintaining a Beautiful Smile?
Gum health is a critical component to any smile, explains Dr. Marios Grigoropoulos of Aesthetica Dental. A general dentist in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Dr. Grigoropoulos says it is impossible to have a beautiful smile without having equally beautiful gums.
Beautiful gums should be pink and healthy. However, maintaining pink, healthy gums does take work. People who do not take good care of their teeth will inevitably run into problems with their gum health, resulting in bleeding gums that may look red or burgundy. The Fort Lauderdale general dentist goes on to explain that people who have significant tartar build up or plaque build up on their teeth, for example, are not going to have smiles that look as white, bright, and attractive as possible – a direct result of poor gum health.
Gum health also plays a role in the longevity of the teeth. The Fort Lauderdale general dentist says that people who have unhealthy gums are very likely to have unhealthy teeth, as well. Gums that are not healthy will commonly end up infected, and Dr. Grigoropoulos says when those types of infections are left untreated they can eat away at the bone around the teeth. This reduction of bone makes the teeth weak and loose, and it can result in teeth falling out or breaking more easily than they should.
Gum health is directly related to oral health, to the point where Dr. Grigoropoulos says a person could not have one without the other. Beyond just the aesthetic and the cosmetic components of healthy gums, the Fort Lauderdale general dentist says the health of the bone and the teeth are major factors that should be taken into consideration.
So what is the key to maintaining healthy gums and preventing conditions like periodontitis and gum disease? Dr. Grigoropoulos says his first tip to patients is to always use their toothbrushes at least two or three times each day. After that, he recommends flossing in between the teeth regularly.
Flossing can be difficult for some people, which is why a number of oral health manufacturers have developed appliances or devices aimed at helping to streamline the process. Dr. Grigoropoulos recommends that people who have difficulty flossing check out some of the devices available at their local drugstores, including waterpiks, plastic tooth flossers, and interproximal brushes designed to make it easier to clean the gums.
