What Types of Orthodontic Treatments Are Recommended For Seniors?
Thanks to Invisalign, adults of all ages can get the straighter, more refined smiles they’ve always wanted without having to resort to metal wires and brackets. According to Boca Raton orthodontics specialist Dr. Robert Spoont, many adults who were hesitant to wear orthodontic braces before are more than willing to give Invisalign a try.
The main reason why so many older adults are willing to try Invisalign – as opposed to traditional orthodontic braces – has to do with aesthetics. As Dr. Spoont explains, many people were hesitant to go through a process that would require them to put bands on and wire on their teeth for an extended period of time. For many, this process in itself was more burdensome than walking around with improperly aligned teeth.
Now, patients no longer have to make that choice. At his office, Freedman & Spoont, P.A., Dr. Spoont has senior patients coming in asking about Invisalign all the time. Invisalign braces are very convenient for adults who work 9 to 5 jobs and those who are retired, since they require minimal maintenance and are virtually invisible when positioned correctly in the mouth.
In Boca Raton, the orthodontics specialist says that Invisalign has been especially popular among senior citizens in recent years. In fact, Dr. Spoont recently put orthodontia on a patient in his early 80s. With that being said, he also cautions that Invisalign might not be right for every elderly patient.
Whether or not Invisalign is the right fit for an elderly patient has to do first and foremost with the person’s bone structure and tooth support. When an orthodontist moves teeth, people tend to lose some bone in the process. If a person does not have much bone to start with, or if some of that person’s teeth are already loose, then that could point to periodontal disease. In cases like that, it’s not smart to start orthodontics until the periodontal disease has been addressed, says Dr. Spoont.
Nonetheless, Dr. Spoont says, the good news is that many older patients are excellent candidates for Invisalign. His older orthodontic patients say that they prefer the Invisalign aligners over traditional braces for a number of reasons, the most important of which is convenience. Being able to take the Invisalign retainers out, and to speak clearly even when they are in, are major factors that have contributed to Invisalign’s popularity at Dr. Spoont’s orthodontics practice in Boca Raton.
