What Are Damon Self‐Ligating Brackets?

What sets Lake Country Orthodontics apart from other offices in Wisconsin is not only the extra attention that the staff pays in regard to patient care, but the materials that Matthew Noyce DDS, an experienced orthodontist in Oconomowoc, has chosen to use on his patients. While other orthodontists may still be choosing to work with the traditional wires and brackets that have been around for decades, there has been a positive change at Lake Country Orthodontics.

Damon Self‐Ligating Brackets are one of the greatest improvements to orthodontics in a while. These brackets are more advanced, Dr. Noyce says, and have little doors on them that hold the wires in place. These brackets also exert a lower force on the teeth while straightening, which, in turn, makes the experience more comfortable for the patient.

What’s even better, Dr. Noyce explains, is that with these brackets, patients are able to go longer in between appointments. With traditional braces, patients previously had to visit the orthodontist’s office every four weeks, but now, patients only need to come back to Lake Country Orthodontics every eight weeks or so. Furthermore, traditionally used brackets would rely on rubber elastic bands that were placed around each bracket, Dr. Noyce says, but that caused friction and binding that would eventually slow down tooth movement and prolong treatment plans. The Damon Self‐Ligating Brackets eliminate this binding and can actually speed up the entire process.

These brackets have been available to orthodontists and their patients since the mid-1990s, Dr. Noyce explains, but recent strides have propelled the technology even further. There have been between four or five different generations of Damon Self‐Ligating Brackets, he says, but the latest generation, which has been on the market for the past 18 months, is by far the best.

While any orthodontist has the ability to offer Damon Self‐Ligating Brackets and the advantages that they bring, Dr. Noyce says that it is important you are receiving your treatment from an orthodontist who has specific experience in this area. As a more recent graduate, Dr. Noyce has had the benefit of learning about the brackets throughout his schooling, which has further helped him utilize this technology.

For other orthodontists who have not had the hands-on experiences with Damon Self‐Ligating Brackets, there are a lot of seminars that enable them to learn more before introducing the materials into their practices. Dr. Noyce, who has been using these brackets for more than a year, explains that currently, he is slowly using the Damon Self‐Ligating Brackets more and more because there are so many benefits when compared to the alternatives that have been traditionally used.

Even though he favors Damon Self‐Ligating Brackets, Dr. Noyce explains that he is still more than capable of treating patients with traditional braces. In some instances, he explains, if it is beneficial to the patient, then the old brackets can be removed and replaced with the Damon brackets to alleviate the stress on the teeth and speed up the treatment process.

At Lake Country Orthodontics, your smile means everything to Dr. Noyce. Therefore, it is important to him that he goes above and beyond to provide the most beneficial treatment available.
