Using Cutting Edge Technology to Fix a Chipped Tooth

Today’s dental offices are very different from the offices people went to 10 or 20 years ago. Thanks to recent advances in cosmetic dentistry, high-tech dental offices like Dr. Alexis DMD have the technology to create perfectly natural looking prosthetic teeth. According to Pembroke Pines dentist Dr. Alexis Glaser, fixing a chipped tooth has never been easier than it is today. A number of options exist for dentists who want to fix a patient’s chipped tooth, including bonding, crowns, and dental veneers.

Depending on how badly a tooth is chipped, Dr. Glaser says that bonding is always the most obvious solution. With the use of a composite material—similar to what dentists use to create fillings—the Pembroke Pines dentist can make a tooth look like brand new. The real benefit to bonding over other options is that a dentist can put it on and repair a tooth without causing any more damage.

If a tooth is badly broken, then bonding may not be an option. In these cases, the Pembroke Pines dentist says veneers would be the next best bet. Using a veneer, Dr. Glaser could cover the front surface of the tooth with porcelain. In terms of the color-match, she says there is nothing better than porcelain. Porcelain veneers match the other teeth in the mouth so closely that it is difficult to determine which teeth are covered with veneers and which are natural. And because veneers are bonded to the teeth, Dr. Glaser says they actually make chipped teeth stronger, as well.

If a tooth is very badly broken, then the Pembroke Pines dentist would use a porcelain crown. A porcelain crown would cover 360 degrees around the tooth. Thanks to the translucency of porcelain, a crown these days can look just like a natural tooth. Nobody has to know that a person has a porcelain crown.

Whether or not a chipped tooth is classified as an “emergency” dental issue depends on the amount of damage and the level of pain that a patient is in. Dr. Glaser recommends that people who are bothered by a chipped tooth, either esthetically or because they are in pain, come in right away to get it fixed. If the chipped tooth is something that is very minor in nature and is not causing the person any pain, then it may be something that can wait until the next semi-annual checkup to repair.
