Is Teeth Whitening a Popular Treatment for Older Patients?

Teeth whitening is an extremely popular cosmetic dental procedure that patients of all ages can be considered good candidates for – including older patients. According to Dr. Robert Spoont of Freedman & Spoont, P.A., in Boca Raton, teeth whitening has become very popular among patients in their 70s and 80s in recent years.
One of the reasons why Dr. Spoont thinks teeth whitening has become so popular among patients of all ages is because dramatic results can be reached in very little time, and with virtually zero discomfort or pain. Patients who never realized they could improve their smiles are coming into Dr. Spoont’s office in Boca Raton and finding out how much they can do with just one or two sessions of in-office teeth whitening treatments.
With that being said, Dr. Spoont is careful to point out that teeth will only whiten so much. This depends both on the initial color or shade of the tooth, and how far a patient is willing to go in the process. Nonetheless, Dr. Spoont says that age seems to be of little importance when determining just how effective teeth whitening will be.
At his practice in Boca Raton, Dr. Spoont has done teeth whitening on patients in their 70s and 80s – and he has been able to achieve great results in very little time with these patients as well. In general, he considers a good candidate for teeth whitening to be anyone who feels that his teeth have gotten darker over time, regardless of age.
Additionally, Dr. Spoont says, the ideal candidate for teeth whitening is someone who does not already suffer from tooth sensitivity issues, since the whitening agent can cause some discomfort or sensitivity in select patients. Although this sensitivity is not necessarily painful, it can be exacerbated in cases where a patient is already suffering from this condition before having his teeth whitened.
Overall, Dr. Spoont estimates that 98% of the patients who visit his practice in Boca Raton are good candidates for teeth whitening. Although he does have a minimum age requirement for patients looking to undergo teeth whitening treatments – patients need to be at least 15 years old – he does not have a maximum age at which he stops performing whitening treatments.
