How CEREC Saves You Time and Energy

Having a toothache is bad enough; so after going to a dentist to help ease the pain, the last thing you want to hear is that you need another procedure like a crown or veneer.  Not only can this hurt you financially and physically, but it can also take time that you may not have to spare. Luckily, a new dental technology called CEREC not only saves you time, but also improves the quality of your dental visit.  Dr. Joe Pace of Pace Dental in Vienna, Virginia discusses how CEREC makes your trip to the dentist better.

Typically, Dr. Pace says, procedures involving crowns, veneers and onlays are done in multiple office visits. First, a tooth impression is taken, and then a dental lab makes the dental device while you wear a temporary one until the real thing is ready.  This process can take weeks. With CEREC, on the other hand, the whole procedure can be done in one visit without you ever having to leave the office.

The procedure for receiving CEREC dental treatment is straightforward, Dr. Pace continues. A blue spectrum camera takes multiple images of your damaged and prepared tooth, sending them directly to the CEREC machine to create 3-D images. The CEREC crown, inlay or veneer is then created inside the machine and milled right in the office, allowing your dentist to create your finished product within an hour or so.  You don’t have to deal with annoying impression trays or wait for a lab somewhere else to finish the mold while you wear an uncomfortable temporary device. Instead of scheduling multiple visits, with CEREC, you can tackle your tooth issues on the spot.

CEREC also preserves more tooth structure by allowing the dentist to be more conservative with removing part of your tooth.  The specificity of the 3D imaging allows for a better fit, with the fabrication placed back in the control of the doctor rather than a lab.  With fewer steps taken, errors are less likely to occur.  This also benefits tooth sensitivity, which can be a major issue for many people.  Simply put, says Dr. Pace, with CEREC, your tooth structure is better preserved and kept sealed, which helps prevent tooth sensitivity.  Also, since fewer procedures are required and there is no temporary crown or cement, your tooth undergoes less stress.

CEREC also cuts down on the discomfort you feel. Not only do you not have to deal with multiple procedures, but you also don’t have to wear an uncomfortable temporary crown or something that’s designed to come out later.

Dental treatments like crowns, veneers, and inlays are important and shouldn’t be delayed when dealing with a damaged tooth.  Visiting a dentist who uses CEREC technology will not only save you time, but also help reduce the risk of tooth sensitivity or damage.
