One should stay away from toothpastes with baking soda, as this can be especially abrasive. As for mouthwash, there’s no need for it, according to Dr. Gelder. While it is good to use every so often, Dr. Gelder says it doesn’t do much for one’s daily routine. Mouthwash is typically used to make one’s breath fresher as well as aid in killing bacteria. But Dr. Gelder warns that it can also kill the good bacteria in your mouth. These bacteria help keep yeast’s under control and help breakdown food.

There are other habits one should also adopt in order to keep their mouth healthy. These include:

  • Reducing soda consumption – regular and diet (the acid from both kinds cause damage to teeth)
  • Staying away from sugary foods like candy
  • Stop smoking
